March 2025 – Biathlon

Written by Sebastien Burgess (Eagle Scout; Webmaster)

On 8 March 2025, we spent the day trying out biathlon in Le Grand-Bornand, in the French Alps.

For those who don’t know, biathlon is a winter sport merging cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. It therefore combines two skills which were new to many of us!

We began by learning how to cross-country ski. Many of us are experienced alpine skiers, but were surprised by how different it was! Since cross-country skis are thinner than regular ones, it took some adjustment (and falling) for us to get the hang of it.

We continued the day with some shooting. This was performed lying down with and without a support, as well as upright. Many people really enjoyed that part, and we discovered some great shots among us!

We concluded by combining the skiing and the shooting in a sort of relay race, which we were all very invested in!

Well done to everyone for trying out something new in beautiful settings and demonstrating excellent Scout Spirit the whole time. Congratulations to all those who earned the Snow Sports merit badge!
