24-25 June 2023 – Allalinhorn Climb (4027m)

On 24 June 2023 6 scouts and 3 scoutmasters took on their first 4000m peak – ALLALINHORN in the Swiss Alps. Having completed ice climbing and glacier training in the Mer de Glace glacier in Chamonix, our climbers arrived in Saas Fee early with the aim to summit in the morning (while it was still cool). Guided by three professional guides we were roped in in groups of 4 and had to cross a crevasse field before turning towards the summit approach. We summited at 10.50am after a tough climb with lots of wind near the peak and had an incredible view of the Swiss Alps including the Matterhorn (Cervin).

We had a photo at the summit and then descended before hiking across to our refuge for the night – the Britannia Hütte. It was tough getting there because of the snow melt and the risk of rock falls. Unfortunately one of our group also got altitude sickness and had to head back down to the village. We made it in the end and slept very well that night! The next day, on the way back to the start télécabine our guides showed us crevasse rescue techniques which was great!
